What Should My Boiler Pressure Be?
What Should My Boiler Pressure Be?
| DIRECT ANSWER BLOCK | Most combi, system and conventional boilers should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold with the heating off. When the heating runs, pressure rises to around 1.5 to 2 bar, then drops back as the system cools. Below 1 bar is too low. Above 2.5 bar needs attention. |
Pressure is the single most common thing homeowners ring us about, and the fix is often a two minute job you can do yourself. Here is how to tell the difference between a normal reading, a slow leak, and a fault worth calling out.
How to read your boiler pressure gauge
Your gauge sits on the front of the boiler, either as a round dial with a needle or as a number on a digital display. Dials usually have a green band marking the safe range and red sections either side. Read the gauge when the heating has been off for a few hours, since a hot system always reads higher than a cold one.
Boiler pressure chart
| Reading when cold | What the reading means | What to do |
| Below 0.5 bar | Very low. Most boilers lock out and stop firing at this point. | Top up through the filling loop. If pressure falls again within days, book a repair. |
| 0.5 to 1 bar | Low. The system has lost water somewhere. | Top up to 1.2 bar and watch the gauge over the next fortnight. |
| 1 to 1.5 bar | Normal. | Nothing. |
| 1.5 to 2 bar while heating runs | Normal expansion as water heats. | Nothing. Check again once cold. |
| 2 to 2.5 bar when cold | Higher than needed. Often follows overfilling. | Bleed a radiator to release a little water. |
| Above 2.5 bar | Too high. The pressure relief valve may start discharging outside. | Stop using the boiler and book an engineer. |
What low boiler pressure means
Low pressure means the sealed system has lost water. Below roughly 0.5 bar, most modern boilers shut down on a safety lockout and you lose heating and hot water. Common causes are a radiator bled recently, a weeping joint under a floor, or a slow leak inside the boiler casing. Topping up restores heating straight away, but a system holding the right pressure should not need topping up more than once or twice a year.
What high boiler pressure means
High pressure usually comes from overfilling, a filling loop left slightly open, or a failed expansion vessel. Once pressure passes about 3 bar, the pressure relief valve opens and dumps water through a copper pipe leading outside, usually near the boiler on an external wall. Water dripping from that pipe outdoors is a pressure fault, not rain. Water appearing inside the house is a different problem, covered in boiler leaking water.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
Pressure falling week after week points to a leak, even one you cannot see. Check radiator valves, pipe joints and the floor under the boiler for damp patches or small rust marks. A pinhole leak under a floorboard can take months to show through a ceiling. A failed expansion vessel also causes repeated drops, and a failing pressure relief valve lets water out slowly even when the system is healthy. Our boiler breakdown and repair team traces leaks across Harrow and Watford without taking up floors unnecessarily. For how fast a drop matters, read boiler losing pressure.
What the expansion vessel does
Inside the boiler sits a sealed vessel holding a cushion of pressurised gas behind a rubber membrane. Water expands as it heats, and the vessel absorbs the extra volume so pressure stays within range. If the membrane fails or the gas charge leaks away, pressure swings hard between cold and hot, and no amount of topping up settles the gauge. Recharging or replacing the vessel is engineer work and usually takes under an hour.
How to top up boiler pressure safely
1. Switch the boiler off and let the system cool.
2. Find the filling loop, a braided silver hose under the boiler with one or two small valves.
3. Open both valves slowly. You should hear water moving.
4. Watch the gauge and close both valves at 1.2 bar.
5. Switch the boiler on and reset any fault code.
Different makes use different filling arrangements, and some use a keyed internal filling valve rather than a loop. Check your manual before touching anything. If you cannot find the loop, stop and call us rather than guess.
How often should you check boiler pressure
Once a month takes a few seconds. Also check after bleeding radiators, after any plumbing work, and at the start of the heating season. A pressure check forms part of every annual boiler service we carry out, along with a flue gas analysis and a safety check on the seals.
When to call an engineer
Call out rather than top up when pressure falls again within a week, when the gauge sits above 2.5 bar cold, when water drips from the relief pipe outside, or when the boiler locks out and will not reset. AR Heating Service is Gas Safe registered under number 574111 and covers Harrow, Watford and the surrounding area. Frequently asked questions
Is 1.5 bar too high for a boiler?
No. 1.5 bar sits at the top of the normal cold range and is a healthy reading. Heating running will push it higher, which is also normal.
Is 1 bar too low for a boiler?
1 bar is the bottom of the normal range. Many boilers run happily there. Top up if the reading keeps falling below 1 bar.
Why does boiler pressure rise when the heating is on?
Water expands as it heats. Expect a rise of roughly 0.5 bar between cold and hot. Pressure should settle back once the system cools.
Can I top up boiler pressure myself?
Yes, through the filling loop, following your boiler manual. Topping up repeatedly is a different matter and means a leak needs tracing.
Will low boiler pressure stop hot water?
Yes. Below around 0.5 bar most boilers lock out on safety, cutting both heating and hot water until pressure is restored.
Can high boiler pressure damage the boiler?
Sustained high pressure stresses seals, joints and the expansion vessel, and keeps the relief valve discharging. Left alone, a cheap valve fault turns into a bigger repair.
